High Springs Town Marshal
Shot and killed by an intoxicated suspect while investigating a disturbance.

George L. Bryant served both as the Town Marshal of High Springs and as an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy from 1890 – 1893 and 1897 – 1908. He was described as “A trusted deputy who was very popular wherever he was known.” It was reported that Bryant was “A genial, wholesome man, very popular in the High Springs community where he had lived a long time and had many warm, devoted friends. He was a tender, loving father and a noble husband.”
Thursday, December 3, 2015; 107 Years Later
The City of High Springs Police Department and Community Redevelopment Agency is honored by Town Marshal George Lasonro Bryant, who was killed in the line of duty on December 3, 1908. A memorial dedication was held on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at 10 am in front of High Springs Police Headquarters. Town Marshal Bryant served the City of High Springs for fifteen years prior to being shot and killed by an intoxicated suspect while investigating a disturbance. Town Marshal Bryant was the first law enforcement officer killed in Alachua County and the only law enforcement officer killed in High Springs.
The City of High Springs will be declared December 3, 2015, as Town Marshal George Lasonro Bryant Day in High Springs, FL. We invited the grandson and great-grandchildren of Town Marshal Bryant to dedicate a memorial to Town Marshal Bryant’s service and sacrifice. A small reception was held following the dedication at the High Springs Community Center.
